Back in 1989, when I started Sunrise Seamless, I kept losing jobs to slick, high-pressure salesmen. I was raised to be honest and upfront, commit, and keep it. But I was watching customers pick companies that were of lower quality and higher price just because they used sales gimmicks — gimmicks I’d simply call dishonest. It was extremely frustrating.

We hired a consultant to help us get more sales, and he laid out a seven-step presentation for us. Finally, we had a good plan — except the seventh step.

The seventh step was one of those tactics: a fake “sale” that had “just expired,” but we’d “honor it” if the customer signed that day. The truth? There was no real sale. Just an inflated price, then a “discount” back down to our normal number.

I tried it once. I hated it.

Right around then, my Aunt Wanda called for an estimate. I asked the consultant how I should price it for the family. His answer was simple: “Give her your best price up front.”

That’s when it clicked, and it was so simple. If my own aunt deserved my straight, best price up front, then so did everyone else.

So that day, I decided: every customer gets the Aunt Wanda treatment. No fake discounts. No pressure games. No tricks.
